Description

This trencher, or mortar board, was probably worn by a staff member of Canterbury College during Diploma Day, most likely either the Vice Chancellor or the Registrar.

It is covered in a red-maroon fabric, patterned with large curling leaves, and topped with a metallic gold tassel. Around the base of the cap is a golden ribbon, patterned with a wheat and mouse design.

The interior of the cap is covered in a the red-maroon felt to stop the trencher from slipping.

The trencher bears a makers label inscribed “By appointment to H.M. Queen Elizabeth II – Robe Makers – Ede and Ravenscroft LTD. 93 & 94 Chancery Lane. London, W.C.2”
