Name/TitlePlacemats
About this objectThis amusing set of eight black and white printed cotton placemats feature classical scenes with a modern twist. There are duplicate sets of 4 pictures. The images are:
- A man and women wearing togas, riding in a 1 horse chariot with a temple in the background
- A figure wearing a toga talking on the telephone
- A seated male figure resting his feet on an angry looking bust, with his sandals hanging on the wall in the background
- Two standing female caryatid (column) figures upset at central seated female figure who is not helping to hold up the temple.
The placemats belonged to Miss Marion Steven, founder of the Logie Collection. Marion and her husband James Logie were well known for their hospitality, welcoming university students and visiting scholars into their home for afternoon teas and dinner parties. Perhaps these placemats were used for guests on such occasions.
