Description

This is a wooden club chair with brown studded leather upholstery. It sits on four legs with a small golden caster wheel attached to each foot. While the top of the seat and back are covered in worn brown leather, the bottom of the seat is covered in sacking material. There are springs visible inside the chair.

Four wooden spindles attach the back of the chair to the seat. Decorative scrolls have been added to each end of the semi-circular back of the chair. Not only does the chair have wheels, but it is also height adjustable, with a central screwing mechanism.

Provenance

In the care of the UC Department of Classics. According to the Department the chair was used at the Canterbury College site in the office of the Professor of Classics, and therefore possibly belonged to John Macmillan Brown. The chair then travelled to Ilam campus with the Classics Department in the 1960s.
