About this objectThis bas-relief, decorated with reliefs showing images of male athletic pastimes, was found durning excavations of the Wall of Themistocles in Athens. The wall thrown up as part of the city’s fortifications against invading armies, and was constructed with sculpture from the near by Kerameikos cemetery. Bas-reliefs such as this one would have belonged to dedicatory statues, some of which would have been commissioned as funerary sculpture. This particular scene is of youths playing with a ball. It is likely to have belonged to a statue commemorating a young aristocratic athlete.
