Name/TitleThe Blond Ephebe
About this objectCast copy of an original marble head of a youth, which is referred to as 'The Blond Ephebe'. The original head would have belonged to a votive statue from the Acropolis in Athens, and is dated to ca. 480 BC (Acropolis Museum Inv. No 689).
The sculpture is typical of the early classical style with a thoughtful expression and naturalistic features. The copyist has applied a slight pink tint to the cast, potentially in imitation to the Greek custom of sculpture painting.
An ephebe is a young adolescent male. More specifically in ancient Athens, an ephebe was a young man who was about to begin the traditional period of two years of military training.
