Name/TitleEarrings
About this objectPair of gold earrings consisting of spiral-twisted hoops with wild antelope's head terminals.
Each earring is in the form of an antelope's head, with a calyx at the neck from which runs the loop of spiral wound gold wire, which decreases in diameter. There are fine rings between the calyx and the back of the antelope's head. Underneath the chin of the antelope is a ring through which the end of the loop has been threaded.
This dome-skulled antelope is a stylised beast that entered into the Greek repertory via Persian art, and similar earrings appear throughout the Hellenistic world in the late fourth and early third century BC.
