Name/TitleSmall stone head
About this objectTo judge by the shape of the face, the large ears and the form of the hair, this head appears to be from a figurine of the archaic period. It probably dates to the sixth century BC, but the small size makes it difficult to be precise. It is possible that the piece is of Italian rather than Greek origin.
Carved from sandstone, the face has a relatively long, straight nose and prominent lips. Sloping, slightly raised brows accentuate the strongly outlined eyes, despite most of the right eye being lost. The hair is cap-like over the top of the head and hangs down in curls over the ears to the level of the chin. It was followed through in broad grooves over the top of the head, but nothing of it is preserved at the back.
